Unemployment rate for April lingers near March’s

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released a number of employment-related reports for April and March 2012 in recent days. The most talked-about of data, the unemployment rate, stayed below double-digits, and was little changed at 8.1% for April.

A recently-released March report from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) analyzed economic data for the city from 2011 and the beginning of 2012.  This Economic Snapshot – a Summary of New York City’s Economy – highlights employment, unemployment, immigration and naturalization, real estate and construction and tourism, travel and transit for the metropolitan area.  Amongst the more noteworthy factoids released, private employment was up by 31,700 jobs in January of this year.

Department of Labor releases several employment-focused reports for last quarter of 2011

Recent economic news releases from the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics highlight various employment data for October and November of this year. Speaking for October, and in relation to the 11 months preceding, the nation’s hires rate was virtually unchanged. Most notably, however, November’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent from the roughly 9 to 9.2 percent it had lingered at in previous months.

A recent report was released by the Empire Center detailing the state of New York’s recent history with employment, from 1993 to 2008.

New York gained more jobs than the rest of the U.S. in the last four years

Historically, any statistics reported for periods of financial recession tend to be depressing. Starting in 2007, the Great Recession brought declines in American employment and overall production; New York State, however, seemed to buck these national declines. The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government at the University of Albany reports that New York outperformed the rest of the country in job gains between 2007 and 2010.

Nationwide employment figures remain unchanged for August 2011

On September 2, 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its monthly Employment Situation report for August 2011. Virtually no changes in nonfarm payroll employment were shown. The unemployment rate, the same as July 2011’s, stayed steady at 9.1 percent.
