Crain’s New York Business recently listed its 50 Best Places to Work in New York City. A quick summary of some of its top 10 companies finds many a unique, even quirky benefit, such as the company that allows six-month unpaid sabbaticals to workers regardless of length of time with the business and another which touts an in-office game room. Below is a glance at the top 10 of 50 NYC businesses Crain’s chosen to highlight.
1. The North Highland Co.
This Atlanta-headquartered management consulting firm made the top of the list for many reasons, not the least being its focus on the employee from its stock ownership plan to allowing workers to set their own schedules and travel plans. Employees choose if a part-time, full-time or even overtime workweek suits them best. There’s no shortage of employee autonomy, either, as staffers feel a genuine sense of purpose, control, and ownership over their positions. Regardless of length of time on the job, unpaid sabbaticals for up to 6 months are even allowed.
2. Mr. Youth
This social media marketing firm pays for the health and wellness programs for its approximately 140 employees, incorporating unique diversions such as rock-climbing and guitar lessons. Taking time off isn’t discouraged, either, as Mr. Youth values – and thinks the work is better from – a well-balanced, rested employee.
3. Conductor Inc.
This search engine optimization technology company touts an open-plan office, uber-casual dress code, and a collaborative, cooperative energy amongst employees.
4. Hunton & Williams
The structure of this Richmond, Virginia-headquartered law firm is inherently open, with communication amongst staffers a key component to its very democratic nature. There are focus groups, monthly staff meetings and a “sounding board” committee to get to the heart of employee ideas and feedback. Free Metro Cards and healthy-living programs round out this law firm’s many perks.
5. Interclick Inc.
This digital marketing firm’s leading-edge proprietary technology has made it an exciting – Verizon, McDonald’s and Ford are clients – yet autonomous place to work. They add that no one is micromanaged, hence making it a worthwhile work experience for its employees.
6. NetApp
At this IT Infrastructure firm open communication and transparency to employees is shared, so much so that senior management meetings are streamed, live, to the desks of all its staff-members.

At this public relations firm innovation and risk-taking is encouraged, and its open plan seats senior staffers with juniors. Even entry-level employees who have a particularly unique idea are allowed to contribute to meetings with big clients.

Interns with marketable ideas can easily become full-time employees at this creative royalties and licensing firm. There exists an environment wherein newly-hired workers and interns have just as much opportunity for growth and success as its CEO.

At this Boston-headquartered law firm inherently simple fundamentals have created a sense of teamwork and absence of hierarchy. Communication and respect are cornerstones, and staff-members are frequently given the opportunity to work with different partners in varying areas.

At this firm specializing in helping patients book doctor appointments online team players are rewarded with favorable and unique perks. There is no specified number of work hours and vacation days are unlimited. Those in-office on Fridays get to take part in happy hour and utilize the on-site game room.
